Longevity Opportunity at the Work Place

The population in Singapore will be ageing more rapidly in the next decade. This demographic change is a combination of lower fertility on the one hand and longevity on the other. This is a phenomenon that will also happen in many cities in Asia.

A maturing workforce will be a new labour market reality. It presents opportunities, because with each worker living longer, he or she can contribute longer to the workplace and the business. Above all, a maturing workforce is a new source of labour in a tight labour market where younger workers are sought after and the import of foreign labour will have its limits. It also presents challenges, because being able to manage a maturing workforce may require significant changes to how we manage HR.

In this session, you will be able to (i) learn about a possible approach to managing a maturing workforce (ii) get ideas on what other companies have done and (iii) network and share with fellow HR practitioners on how to overcome issues in recruiting and retaining mature workers.

This session is part of a series of focus group consultations by the Ministerial Committee on Ageing, in preparing an action plan to help Singaporeans achieve successful ageing. This will be an opportunity for the government to hear from the HR community and your feedback on what more government, unions and companies can do to collectively make longevity a competitive advantage for Singapore.
